On 25 October local elections were held throughout Ukraine, with the exception of the rebel-held areas in the East of the country, to elect local councils and mayors. With complete results announced today, President Petro Poroshenko’s supporting parties managed to retain the dominant position in the West of the country. However, the country appears deeply divided as in the East and the South the Opposition Bloc, formed by the remnants of Party of Regions of former pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych, won seats. A second round of elections will be held next week in constituencies where results were indecisive. The EU said the elections were “another important step” in the right direction, but “additional efforts are needed to further enhance the integrity of and public confidence in the electoral process”.
